Topping-out ceremony at AGORA

Topping-out ceremony

In building construction, a topping-out ceremony - one of the industry's oldest customs - is celebrated when the last beam is placed at the top of a building. It usually includes the placing of an evergreen tree and a (Danish) flag upon the structure.

DTU Elektro celebrated the AGORA building's topping-out with the involved contractors, architects and many of the future users. At the event there were speeches, networking and a delicious barbecue lunch.

A milestone has been reached on the way to completion of the AGORA building 329A. DTU Elektro celebrated the topping-out with contractors, architects and many staff members on a very cold and snowy Tuesday, 20 January 2015.

The new building will when completed connect buildings 326, 328 and 329, and include 1,850 m2 fitted with state-of-the-art research facilities in the energy and power systems field (PowerLabDK), offices, teaching areas and an auditorium.

The topping-out event took place in AGORA's lobby area from where you could get a good overview of the progress of the construction and admire the bright and open interior.

Anders Madsen, Project Manager (DTU), opened the ceremony by welcoming all the present guests and giving a brief introduction to the building project. His introduction was followed by a speech by Jacob Steen Møller, Campus Director (DTU).

Kristian Stubkjær, Head of Department at DTU Electrical Engineering, gave a speech where he praised and thanked everybody involved in the building process on behalf of all the future users of the building. He said that he was "happy to see how the building was taking shape and that the teaching areas, electric labs for PowerLabDK and office rooms were becoming visible".

Kristian Stubkjær talked about the Greek word AGORA which means 'meeting place'. He also suggested that AGORA in this case could mean:

Absolut (absolutely)
Godt (good)
Ordentligt (properly)
Rettidigt (timely)
Arbejde (work)

"We are eager to take the new building into use and therefore encourage you to continue the good work in finalizing AGORA" Kristian Stubkjær said.

Finally, he thanked the organizers of the topping-out ceremony for a good event with the words:

Appetitlig (appetizing)
Gourmetagtigt (gourmet style)
Opkvikkende (refreshing)
Rejsegilde (topping-out ceremony)
Arrangement (arrangement)

Nicolai Overgaard, CEO of Rørbæk & Møller Arkitekter and Jan Stysiek, Contract Director of CC Brun Entreprise made the final speeches before a barbecue lunch was served.

AGORA is to be completed in September 2015.
