Partners of the Parker project met in mid-December to mark the end of the project initialization phase and to begin its official launch as they strive to apply grid-balancing services to a fleet of electric vehicles to demonstrate their potential to support the electricity grid as power resources.

Parker builds on two previous DTU related projects (EDISON and Nikola) which have already laid the foundation for understanding the electric vehicle’s potential in balancing the Danish power system. Parker represents the next technology readiness level by allowing balancing services to be applied to a fleet of electric vehicles.

The term readiness concerns whether the car can actively support the grid. All electrical vehicles are able to pull power from the grid, but grid readiness means that the vehicle possesses certain features to also assist the grid.

In this way the aim of the Parker project is to validate that series-produced electric vehicles, as part of an operational vehicle fleet, can support the power grid by becoming a vertically integrated resource, providing seamless support to the power grid both locally and system-wide

Ultimately, the Parker project aims to ensure the role of electric vehicles as contributors to securing an economic and reliable power system based on a high share of renewable energy.

Research and development in this project is carried out in collaboration between commerical OEM's, technology providers, fleet owner, academic institutions and customers. The last part of the initialization phase has been used to welcome four new partners to the project: Enel, Mitsubishi Corp., Mitsubishi Motors and Group PSA.

This addition means that the project budget will increase with up to 50 percent and that Center for Electric Power and Energy will receive a total of seven electric vehicles and six charging stations from OEM participants.
