Søren Find Madsen is this year's recipient of the Electro Award (Elektroprisen) which is awarded by Elektrofondet at The Danish Society of Engineers, IDA.

Søren Find Madsen is described as one of the leading international experts on lightning protection of wind turbines and other high voltage subjects. He is CTO and co-owner of the company Global Lightning Protection Services A/S with headquarters in Herning.

Søren Find Madsen became MSc from DTU in 2001 and two years later he began his PhD project in lightning protection of wind turbines ('Interaction between electrical discharges and materials for wind turbine blades – particularly related to lightning protection') which he completed in 2006. The results of his PhD work are published in a number of scientific articles and are today incorporated in the current Lightning Protection Standard for wind turbines. The PhD project was supervised by Professor Joachim Holbøll, Center for Electric Power and Energy at DTU Elektro.

Furthermore, Søren Find Madsen received the 'Young Scientist Award' in 2006 which was awarded at the 'International Conference on Lightning Protection' which is one of the most important international conferences on lightning protection.

Søren Find Madsen's efforts in the electrotechnical field are emphasized as a highly successful example of collaboration between the university research environment and the Danish and international industries working with complex constructions such as wind turbines and aircrafts.

Apart from the professional recognition which the award is a symbol of the award is accompanied by an amount of DKK 30,000.

Awards for promising candidates

In connection with the Electro Award a number of Candidate Awards (E-kandidatpriser) are also awarded to graduates and promising engineers. This year three theses were awarded with Candidate Awards each accompanied by an amount of DKK 10,000.

Kasper Lüthje Jørgensen receives the Candidate Award for his thesis about electrically conductive textiles which in the future may be used for monitoring health data or measurements related to sports performance. The project is carried out in collaboration between DTU and Ohio State University. The project was supervised by Associate Professor Kaj Bjarne Jakobsen, Electromagnetic Systems at DTU Elektro.

David Vinter Schultz Larsen receives the Candidate Award for his thesis carried out at DTU Elektro (Electronics group) about the development of driver circuits for a laser which can be used in connection with OCT scans (i.e. scans of the eye).

The third Candidate Award is shared between Chris Skovgaard Hansen and Kristian Didriksen Lund for their thesis which was carried out at Aalborg University.

The awards were motivated and presented by the Chairman of Elektrofondet Ole Lauridsen.

E-Awards

  • The Electro Award is an annual award of honour, which Elektrofondet awards to a person with a promising effort in the electrotechnical / electronic field, evidenced by excellent technical-scientific work on a high professional level for some years and related to Danish research or industry.

  • The Candidate Awards are awarded to promising young engineering graduates in electrical engineering / electronic field by graduating from one of the Danish engineering institutions. Candidates are expected to have delivered a particularly outstanding thesis with significant technical / scientific content and perspectives for practical use.

  • The award ceremony took place at Ingeniørhuset in Copenhagen 28 November 2016.
