Pierre Pinson has been appointed Professor in Modelling of Electricity Markets at DTU Elektro, Center for Electric Power and Energy. He will be heading the Electricity Market group with 10 scientific staff members. His appointment will start on the 15th of March.

The research of Pierre Pinson will contribute to solve some of the major challenges associated with the transformation of the energy system towards a reliable, cost effective and sustainable infrastructure. He and the research group will focus on electricity markets, which are a crucial aspect of modern energy system. He will strengthen the education of engineers with competences within electricity markets, and he will further develop the close collaboration of the center with energy companies, industry and academia world-wide as well as internally at DTU.

Pierre Pinson was previously Associate Professor in Stochastic Energy Systems at DTU Compute. After receiving a M.Sc. In Applied Mathematics from the National Institute of Applied Sciences in Toulouse, France, as well as a Ph.D. in Energetics from Ecole des Mines de Paris, also in France, he first moved to DTU in 2006.

Since then, he has been very active as principal scientist and work package leader in a number of Danish and European projects focusing on the optimal integration of renewable energy sources (mainly wind energy) in power systems operations and electricity markets.

All this research is framed in a probabilistic framework, from modelling to forecasting and stochastic optimization for market modelling and decision-making under uncertainty. He held short and longer visiting positions at University of Oxford (Mathematics Institute), University of Washington, Seattle (Dpt. Of Statistics) and the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF, UK). He acts as editor for the journals Wind Energy and for IEEE Transactions on Power Systems.
