Actively controlled buildings as an asset in intelligent power grids

The PowerFlexHouse facility at DTU Risø is a collection of three individual houses, which have been equipped with sensors and controllable power and heating equipment and are interconnected in a configurable 400 V micro grid and communication platform.

The Flex house test facility comprises:

  • A 120m2 eight room office building
  • A 100m2 one story domestic house
  • A 150m2 three story domestic house

and are including:

  • refrigerators/freezers
  • hot water boilers
  • electric stoves
  • dish washers
  • washing machines/dryers
  • light installations
  • cooling/heating air conditioners with heat pumps

The Test and Demonstration services of the Power Flex Houses facility include:

  • Demand side response studies
  • Consumption and user behavior simulation
  • Control strategy analyses
  • Consumer impact studies
  • Grid impact studies
  • In terms of power, heating, ventilation and hot water supply the houses appear as islands to the rest of DTU Risø Campus buildings
  • Possible parallel operation on the SYSLAB power grid
  • Houses can be operated as single entities or as combined loads to the grid
